This is probably one of my favorite books from the Intrigue line. The heroine had suffered a great deal in her life but she has managed to come out on top. Enter the sexy hero, hero being a very appropriate term. Just reading the description had me drooling! He's my perfect man rolled up in a delicious package. I'm excited to read the rest of the books in the series. My one gripe about this story is pretty much the same as most romance novels. Ok, Ms Miller's long-running series flies in the face of the series going on too long theory.

Somehow, possibly because she visits family, friends, co-workers, and possibly because the books are short so she doesn't run out of things to say, she's managed to keep this series going through over 20 books. Well, at least until the bastage was dead. I was also more than a little surprised that the h hadn't had more intensive self defense training under the circumstances. IN spite of the issues though, the book was decent. Maggie Wheeler's life has not been easy but things are starting to look up.

Julie Miller delivers a great start to what looks to be another great series. Along with all the new faces are old friends from her past books. Plus she gives us a new villian that will bring shivers to your spine. I am looking forward to getting to know the rest of the task force as they work together to bring down the Red Rose Rapist. Nice, entertaining reading with believable and real characters. The background story going on is gripping and interesting, though it's a bit disappointing that part of it is not really getting a closure in the end. I find it very refreshing that while both leading charcters have lots of baggage due to their past experiences, they deal well with it, and it's a nice change to read about characters who had such problems, but are already at the leaving-behind-them-stage, and don't drag the reader th Nice, entertaining reading with believable and real characters.

Really enjoyed the light mystery romance this book had. Better with historicals, but I am finding I like contemp. Wished I had known the mystery didn't finish in this book.

I will now have to find the next book!!! Great read. May 10, Robin rated it it was amazing. I think this was one of my favorites of Julie's books and I can't quite put my finger on why. The characters are so complex and I love the way I am picking up characters from other of her books. I only wish it had been longer. View 2 comments. First off, I picked up this book on an utter whim on a insane shopping spree at a warehouse close out book sale. I wasn't expecting much because I plucked it out of a pile of similarly colored Harlequins.

And besides that, anybody who has seen my review of romance books is probably aware we have a love hate relationship. I love to read them, but they usually make me feel very hateful for one reason or another. Usually because I think a character is acting particularly stupid or they've completely First off, I picked up this book on an utter whim on a insane shopping spree at a warehouse close out book sale.

Usually because I think a character is acting particularly stupid or they've completely flubbed up how something works just for the sake of the plot making the story completely unbelievable and painful to suffer through. Pick something else. A lion or a tiger or a wolf. Other than that, the story line is interesting. It took awhile. But in general I would very much recommend this one. The sex isn't particularly explicit so it's not exactly steaming up the windows but I thought it was a good story and while the mystery wasn't much, the characters weren't stupid about it.

May 11, Paula Legate rated it it was amazing Shelves: action-romance , favorites , romance-suspence. I really loved this book! I'm a sucker for books with military Hero's. This is part of a series, but each book is a stand alone. The series is about The rose Red rapist of Kansas city, and the KCPD, and a small task force of Police officers trying to find and capture the rapist before he strikes again.

The police department has very few clues to go on. Maggie is part of that task force. Her special talent is being able to talk to the victims. Her husband beat her, and raped her, and she ended up in the hospital. He went to jail for beating Maggie. Now he is out and stalking her.

Strange things starts to happen as soon as her ex gets out of jail. Maggie is a single mother to her 9 year old son. Maggie meets her sexy new neighbor by being stuck in a elevator with him. Her son instantly likes John. Maggie has too much going on to date, or even look at the opposite sex. John is a marine, coming home injured from the war. He lost his leg in a explosion. He is attempting to find a new normal to his life. He was a fire fighter before the military. Now he is going back to work for the fire department, but without his leg he can no longer be on the front lines.

He feels like he is not useful. I loved the way throughout the story Maggie teaches John that he is more a man after his accident that he was before. He is still a great protector. He can do more with one leg, and his fake leg, than most men can do with two legs. John gives Maggie the strength and courage to face her ex. This is a really great suspense. We know Maggie is being stalked, and strange things are happing.

However we don't know if it is her ex behind them, or if it is the rose red rapist, or just another creep. I love the ending. There's a serial rapist in Kansas City and Maggie is on the task force to help find this guy. Maggie is also a single mother of a 9 year old son and a survivor herself.

John has just returned to KC and is returning to work at the fire department, this time as an arson investigator. He and Maggie meet as he is moving into the apartment next door to her. He is there when stran I loved this book. He is there when strange accidents start happening in the apartment building, and steps up to help protect Maggie and Travis.

I really liked the way that John bonded so quickly with Travis. He also found himself enjoying the time he spent with them, and discovered that being around them made him happy - something he hadn't been in awhile. I also liked the way that while he was available to help, he didn't take over but supported Maggie in what she needed to do. Maggie hadn't been this close to a man since her ex-husband and was amazed at how quickly she developed feelings for John.

I really liked seeing the way she opened up with him. I also liked the fact that she simply accepted his war injuries for what they were and didn't make a big deal about them. Pretty fast moving and readable. Another in a long line of books about the KCPD. I liked the hero and how he had been in unrequited love with another woman for years but once he saw Maggie he was over it.

I wasn't as fond of Maggie because even though she was a cop, she was still a pretty weak person. The relationship moved VERY fast. I'm not sure even a week had passed and they were all in love but I forgave it because it was well written and in romantic suspense you usually don't have as much Pretty fast moving and readable.

I'm not sure even a week had passed and they were all in love but I forgave it because it was well written and in romantic suspense you usually don't have as much time to work with or the crime element becomes ludicrously drawn out. The crime was interesting but the over arcing serial killer story was not completed in this book so we'll need to see the next story. I have an idea of who the next couple will be but it's just that, an idea. So that's nice because I don't like heavy handed sequel bait. Survival instinct Having survived an abusive marriage , Maggie has created a new life for her and her son, Travis.

When her ex shows up again, she turns to former Marine and Kansas City fireman, John.

Together they work through issues and search for a serial killer. Strong characters and spine tingling twists and turns pull you from the beginning to the end. A must read from Julie Miller. May 10, Debbie Heaton rated it it was amazing. Having survived a traumatic event ten years earlier, Maggie was surprised when John Murdock moved in next door and her son immediately bonded with him.

A wounded warrior himself, John can do nothing but protect the woman and child while fighting the attraction that blossoms between them. Aug 10, Carly - Resident Supergirl rated it it was ok. The overall "mystery" that was the core of the book outside of the romance, didn't grab my attention and I mostly became interested in their relationship more than anything else. Jul 27, Moria rated it it was ok. I had two major issues with this story. A character sits in their car and thinks about the past. Or sits in their office and goes over the past.

Or stands in their kitchen and thinks about the recent past It gets old very fast. When the H and h finally have their "first date" we don't read about it as it happens. Instead I had two major issues with this story. Instead we get the heroine sitting around after the fact basically telling the reader what happened. It made it hard to sympathize with her. Of course that would also end the story. Instead she repeatedly does stupid things in order to keep the plot going. On the other hand, maybe the author also just doesn't know enough about police procedure.

I also have an issue with a character we're supposed to view as tough, who's independent and who's taken charge of her life after being victimized by a man - who then turns to another man to save her. She actually does next to nothing for herself. It's all left up to the hero to fix everything, which he does purely because of how she looks she's a stranger who's not particularly nice to him and because his own need to take care of the world.

In contrast, she is a basket case from page one. Sadly, we don't see that.

This is one of many cases where I think an author can only write what they know. Throughout the book it seemed the heroine was very good at being codependent and playing a victim. But boundaries, toughness, or actual self-reliance did not exist in her world. Case in point - one minor character who could easily be viewed as an entitled heiress having a bridezilla fit is instead called out as projecting the persona of a strong, powerful professional woman. The reader knows she's not exactly a bridezilla.

Oh, and stories where a couple spend all of a few days together and it's happily ever after always make me roll my eyes. Here it's worse since a child is involved. This being a romance, of course the child instantly picks the hero as his new dad. May 06, Kaetrin rated it liked it Shelves: contemporary , 99c-special , romantic-suspense , ebook.
