Asymmetric Politics: Ideological Republicans and Group Interest Democrats | Oxford University Press
The Democrats finally managed to have Obamacare passed, only to see Republicans sweep to power in the House by running against it and then plunging the government into prolonged gridlock. Republicans found themselves incapable of proposing anything concrete to replace Obamacare with, despite scores of votes to repeal it, and the frustration that was generated as a result disenchanted many GOP voters, opening the way for Trump's rise. I join with the authors in believing that it would be wise for both parties to learn from their mistakes.
Yet these lessons are difficult to learn — for both parties — precisely because their different natures are etched into each operation at every interconnected level.
This is a worthy goal but anyone who's read the book faithfully can't help but see that it might be impossible because Republicans reject the pragmatic mindset on ideological grounds. Democrats should also offer conservatives pragmatic opportunities to eliminate government programs in order to show that their preferred governing style does not always need to be paired with expansive government and faster social change. Compared to the richness and power of the book's analysis, these prescriptions seem a bit pallid, if well-intentioned.
But that's to be expected. They're only a bare starting point. It's only after folks begin seriously debating within this new, realistic framework of understanding that we should expect truly vigorous, robust new solutions to emerge. Let the debate begin!

Description The Republican Party is best understood as the vehicle of an ideological movement whose leaders prize commitment to conservative doctrine; Republican candidates primarily appeal to voters by emphasizing broad principles and values. This one will. Grossmann and Hopkins' research decisively shows that the two parties are not the same-and once you understand the ways in which they're different, American politics begins to make a lot more sense.
Asymmetric Politics encourages a badly-needed re-examination of the very distinctive internal workings and strategic choices of Democrats and Republicans. It is required reading in this confusing time. This is useful for understanding how the nation got to a point of contemplating a possible Donald Trump presidency.
