The Democrats finally managed to have Obamacare passed, only to see Republicans sweep to power in the House by running against it and then plunging the government into prolonged gridlock. Republicans found themselves incapable of proposing anything concrete to replace Obamacare with, despite scores of votes to repeal it, and the frustration that was generated as a result disenchanted many GOP voters, opening the way for Trump's rise. 6. Description The Republican Party is best understood as the vehicle of an ideological movement whose leaders prize commitment to conservative doctrine; Republican candidates primarily appeal to voters by emphasizing broad principles and values. This one will. Grossmann and Hopkins' research decisively shows that the two parties are not the same-and once you understand the ways in which they're different, American politics begins to make a lot more sense.

Asymmetric Politics encourages a badly-needed re-examination of the very distinctive internal workings and strategic choices of Democrats and Republicans. It is required reading in this confusing time. This is useful for understanding how the nation got to a point of contemplating a possible Donald Trump presidency.
