Average customer rating 5 2 comments. For those who are familiar with permaculture, I would like to share how this book is different. The more a permaculture book tries to be useful to everyone, the more difficult it is for it to be useful to a specific person or climate zone. This book was written by some one currently in Portland, Oregon. The first edition was written while he was in a comparatively rural area in Oregon. This edition benefits by also having his insights about gardening in Portland itself.

For anyone who wants to practice permaculture in the Pacific Northwest, you will find this book very valuable and useful. For those who are interested in permaculture but not familiar with it, this is a great book. Some permaculture books can be very technical and huge! This book and the information in it are both very manageable. For example, his discussion with examples of what a guild is happens to be the best I have read in the literature, especially for those new to permaculture.
Part of the beauty of the book is that those who are familiar with permaculture will find much of interest in this book, especially if you are gardening in the Pacific Northwest. But also, those who are not familiar with permaculture will find the book very approachable.
I love this book! Gaia's Garden is a fantastic guide to making gardening 'easier'- in other words, how to make your garden produce the most food for the least amount of effort. It guides you to set up natural systems that provide everything plants need on site.
Samenvatting The first edition of Gaiais Garden sparked the imagination of Americais home gardeners, introducing permacultureis central message: Working with Nature, not against her, results in more beautiful, abundant, and forgiving gardens. This extensively revised and expanded second edition broadens the reach and depth of the permaculture approach for urban and suburban growers.
Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture - Toby Hemenway
Many people mistakenly think that ecological gardeningowhich involves growing a wide range of edible and other useful plantsocan take place only on a large, multiacre scale. As Hemenway demonstrates, itis fun and easy to create a ibackyard ecosystemi by assembling communities of plants that can work cooperatively and perform a variety of functions, including: Building and maintaining soil fertility and structure Catching and conserving water in the landscape Providing habitat for beneficial insects, birds, and animals Growing an edible iforesti that yields seasonal fruits, nuts, and other foods This revised and updated edition also features a new chapter on urban permaculture, designed especially for people in cities and suburbs who have very limited growing space.
Whatever size yard or garden you have to work with, you can apply basic permaculture principles to make it more diverse, more natural, more productive, and more beautiful. Best of all, once itis established, an ecological garden will reduce or eliminate most of the backbreaking work thatis needed to maintain the typical lawn and garden.

Recensie s Toby Hemenway's Gaia's Garden will be recorded in history as a milestone for gardeners and landscapers--a fusion of the practical and the visionary--using the natural intelligence of Earth's symbiotic communities to strengthen and sustain ecosystems in which humans are a partner, not a competitor. An amazing achievement showing how we can and must live in harmony with nature!
No one should be without it. They are here to stay and flourish. Gaia's Garden is enlightening and required reading for all people who desire to make their home's landscape healthy, sustainable, and healing. Gaia's Garden is one of the more important, a book that will be absolutely necessary in the world ahead. Practical yet visionary, broad-ranging yet focused on the basics one needs to know, this is a great place to start on the permaculture path. The new edition builds solidly on the success of the first.
