Even though the theater was completely rebuilt and rebranded, spirits of the dead remained: apparitions have been seen in "Death Alley," the street behind the theater where bodies were stacked after the disaster and a common stop on many a Chicago ghost tour. Also go for: Impressive museums , some of the most pleasant people you'll find anywhere, and so much pizza and not just deep-dish , either.
History lesson: What do you get when you cross a storied past with spectacular mansions? Real haunted houses. Public hearings—and hangings—reportedly took place on the grounds before the Greek-revival-style house was built, and Yankee Jim, whose ghost stomps around upstairs, or so the story goes, was hanged on the property.
If reports are to be believed, the family, too, never left. Violet Whaley committed suicide in , but visitors report spotting her, as well as her parents, who presumably refuse to rest in peace while their daughter still roams among the living. In , year-old Kate Morgan checked in under an alias, only to shoot and kill herself days later.
Current-day guests report odd occurrences , like the TV and lights turning on and off by themselves, the sound of footsteps, inexplicable breezes and scents, and a woman materializing and vanishing in the garden—and hallways—before their eyes. Also go for: Perfect weather, the best Mexican food north of the border, and afternoons spent exploring the many museums of Balboa Park. History lesson: Hauntings abound in this deeply mystical city. A violent and often tragic past—including a slave market larger than any other in the country, the massive fires of and , and ferocious epidemics of yellow fever—fuels the ghost lore.
Today, it is a French Quarter landmark, facing the Mississippi and surrounded by the St. Louis Cathedral and a complex of shops, galleries, and high-end apartments. But during the 18th century and into the first half of the 19th century, it was a public square and the site of atrocious executions of criminals and slaves. Also go for: Po' boys and beignets , authentic jazz music , and the sculpture garden at NOMA —one of the best in the world. History lesson: By day, visitors flock to the San Fernando Cathedral to check out the oldest standing church in the state, and maybe even attend its El Mariachi Mass on Sunday.
But a stroll alone on the grounds of this Gothic Revival cathedral at night is more of a dare. In , construction workers renovating the church unearthed bones, nails, and tattered military uniforms near the altar; some believe that they belonged to three fallen soldiers of the Alamo, while others dismiss this as myth, given that the dead were extinguished by fire. This apparently does not deter ghosts from showing up: Visitors over the years have reported shadow figures and orbs in their photographs and fleeting glimpses of ghosts in the back of the church itself, including a man dressed all in black and figures in hooded, monk-like garb.
Spooky spots: According to the San Antonio Express-News , many popular hotels in the city claim to have permanent, otherworldly guests. At the Menger Hotel, guests have reported sightings of a former hotel maid named Sally White, roaming the hallways while carrying a stack of towels. The Emily Morgan is another haunted spot, where the ninth floor once housed wounded Alamo soldiers and now has special "amenities" for guests, like the sounds of slamming doors and objects mysteriously moving during the night. Sort order. Jan 16, Teresa rated it liked it Shelves: I really enjoyed the first two books of this series, but this one isn't quite up to par. The hauntings were just ok. Some of the characters' personalities seemed incongruous from previous books, particularly Beth's and Burt's.
What I really didn't like was the whole love triangle quadrangle? I hope that doesn't continue to be a theme with future books. Another problem I had was that the editing ebook was just terrible. Spelling, misuse of words, open quotation marks- it was sloppy and, again, distracting. Disappointing, since the first book was excellent and the second was also quite good. Looking forward to continuing with the series for now, but I hope the editing gets cleaned up and the relationship problems take a background to the hauntings and the PEEPs investigations.

Book 3 in the haunted series by Alexie Aaron. The first one is based at an old run down bar on Route 66 which used to a frequent hang out for some unruly biker gangs. The team sees that is is an escalating problem but are not quite prepared for how rough and full on it is becoming. This problem takes a back seat for a little while, which sees Ted and Mia at the museum h Book 3 in the haunted series by Alexie Aaron.
This problem takes a back seat for a little while, which sees Ted and Mia at the museum helping Bernard with a problem of his. This entity is more spoiled brat than outlaw biker, but is seeming to be just as nasty. The beach babe haunting the museum came to be inside by being trapped in a piece of fulgurite.

Her spirit was trapped when a lightning strike form the fulgurite. I found both cases to be as interesting as each other. It was nice to actually see part of the story based in the museum, I found this to be pretty cool, and it was nice to have Bernard and Ralph be more involved in the story this time around. I love their characters. Ralph has a penchant for redecorating when Mia is out of town, this time is no exception. I love that Murphy has become a reoccurring character in this series. His story, and feelings for Mia raises interesting questions which make me think of the Television show 'Spirited' starring Claudia Karvan.
Can a human and a spirit be in love?
What happens if they pursue this? I feel like these questions may be explored at some point, but not at least for a little while seeing as Whit as reappeared. The abrupt ending of Burt and Mia's relationship was exactly that, abrupt. There was no lead up or subtle changes to make the reader see this coming, I do however believe that it was the right choice. I've found myself becoming more open to the possibility of a relationship between Whit and Mia. Whether or not it will last, time will tell. The characters are developing more through this installment, as we see with Beth's outburst over something rather trivial.
I like that the author shows these characters for exactly what they are, human, with human feelings and thoughts. None of the characters come across as perfect and this is fantastic, I believe it makes the characters more relatable. I'm interested in the constant evolution of the characters, and I'm a sucker for a good ghost story. So I'm looking forward to continuing this series. I can't wait to see what the guys get themselves in to next. Oct 09, Tracy rated it liked it Shelves: gothic-ghost.
I really wanted to love this series — I did love the ghost stories, they were brilliant. But the characters and their interactions have just become to much.
And if anyone dares to criticise her, every other character coming to her defence. I honestly thought that I had spent the last two book reading about a burgeoning attraction between Ted and Beth.
And, predictably, Beth is told not to join the others until she can get over her unreasonable jealousy of Mia. Oct 26, Janice Clifford rated it it was amazing. Two for the price of one I liked the double story of two sites that were actually tied together spiritually. Spoilers ahead However, since I cheated a little by reading the synopsis for each book in the series, I already know who Mia ends up with and I'm not sure how the author will pull this off without one or more characters being emotionally destroyed.
I also admit, as a geek myself, it's nice to know my team wins.
