We respect what each family feels is best for them, which is also a form of hospitality, and to that end we also have a nursery that is staffed each week with a paid and vetted nursery attendant. Children are not only welcome to stay with their families, but we teach that they should be regular participants in the rotation of volunteers.
Quest For Pure Christianity
Our worship services require an average of 15 volunteers each week, and each week there are usually between two and five children or teenagers represented. No job is really off limits, but some may require modifications and that is a consideration we would be making for any person. One of our Altar Guild volunteers has two small children, and after worship this past week I watched as her young children confidently began the tasks of the job, assisting their mother. As much as I feel that children and youth should be included in the regular life of the congregation and its ministry, I do still distinguish that young people are not miniature adults.
The stages of childhood development and learning need to be honored throughout their Christian education and nurturing, and for this, the work of childhood development specialists can be particularly helpful, such as the work of Drs. Adolescents and teenagers are wrestling with so much more than most adults had to before them; and yet, for them it is all they know.

They are striving to figure out exactly who they are, and they need a community around them, a community that they feel welcome and integrated into, to teach them and to show them why it is worth it to turn over their lives to Christ. If the adults cannot talk about their faith and model the life of a disciple, how can we ever expect the children to do so? Furthermore, the adults cannot talk about or model their faith if they are not in a trusted relationship with young people.
The act of examining our faith strengthens it, which make adults better mentors and partners in ministry for the youth. All of this is only possible if we as a community are in relationship with each other, practicing inclusion and hospitality.
Practicing Passion: Youth and the Quest for a Passionate Church - Congregational Resource Guide
I push back against the tendency to restrict certain groups to a set of parameters; without those types of barriers, there is nothing that says a teenager cannot lead a bible study, or that a ten year old cannot serve as an usher. My theology of ministry with those in the first third of life is to include them in the ministry of the congregation and beyond, which is then fundamentally my theology of ministry with any defined group in the church.

If the church is to speak meaningfully to youth and in turn reap the many benefits that young people have to offer, then its ministry must be predicated on passion — the Passion of Christ, the passion of youth, and the passionate faith that results when these two things come together. The uniqueness of Practicing Passion lies in its relocating youth ministry in practical theology rather than in educational theory or psychological or social development.
While youth ministry has routinely capitalized on the passions of adolescents, little attention has been given to the theological mooring that youth need to connect with the church and hold firm amid the growing demands of popular culture.
