Getting There

Leaving Canada I was excited to do this hike. We were hiking from Bowness-on-soloway to Segadunum. I was very disappointed to find that after 3 days of hiking, no wall to be found! The only existing part of the walk is around Twice Brewed.

For almost years, this stone structure represented the northwestern most border of an empire that stretched east for Its a wall, pure and simple! But it is an amazing achievement given when it was built and what it stood for. Built by thousands of men around AD on the orders of Hadrian. We visited it just at one section and yes we were Great English heritage site nearby Brampton with interesting Birdowald roman fort and roman walls that go on for miles.

Great to appreciate the history, you can imagine the people and history this place has. We need bridges now not walls!! Lovely place to visit even with young children, felt it was a little bit expensive for what we got, but all enjoyed it. Nowadays there's very little wall left as a lot of it has been filched for local buildings. But it's well worth walking the HW walk itself because it's through some spectacular countryside with good places to stay.

Finally — Bowness on Solway is the end of our journey. The Temple of Mithras is a fascinating temple dedicated to the god beloved by Roman soldiers. It was the largest of such buildings to occupy the site and, like many Mithraic temples, it was situated near a military base.

On the site of Vindolanda, a bonfire was started to burn the documents from the commanding officer's house c. AD before the 9th cohort of Batavians were sent on their next campaign in Dacia, Romania. The variable Northumbrian weather, aided, perhaps, by careless servants, had ensured that the fire had been extinguished before the flames had completed their work, thus preserving hundreds of written documents for archaeologists to uncover.
