Napoleon would win again- but begin to show the coming decline- this was MUCH closer than Austerlitz. Those I had "fought" several times as a young wargamer, but I did not remember the battles that set them up. This book was great in bringing me back up to date.

Eggmühl 1809

By the end I felt I had a good handle in the history, strategy and the tactical elements of this campaign. For the junior reader, hard to think of a better book, the plethora of support material is wonderful for young minds. Since all the skirmishes in between the larger battles are discussed, the gamer has many scenarios to ponder, just as the modeller can develop many Dioramas. I think I will want this close if I ever do a battle tour in Germany and Austria. A Strong rec for the intended markets, a good simple book to get you up to speed or start your search for deeper sources.

Castle does a fantastic job presenting the battle and provides an abundance of photographs showing the area today. A very helpful book which is heavy on the high level details. Aug 05, William Paley rated it liked it. A lesser read from this series, but I found some of the material useful. I must confess: I had never heard of this campaign before.

Batte of Eggmuhl (February )

The book features orders of battle there were a series of battles during this campaign , maps some of which are not overly helpful , and the battlefield today. The centerpiece, of course, is the description of the series of battles, culminating in the conflict at Eggmuhl. The series of battles began at Landshut. There followed struggles at Abensburg, Landshut again , and--finally--Eggmuhl.

Napoleon's forces won the battles--but did not crush the Austrian forces. A good work.
